Ear Candling
Also known as coning, ear candling claims to remove ear wax build-up and fungus in the ear canal. A cone-shaped candle is inserted into a protective plate, which is then gently placed in the client's ear canal. Once the candle is lit and begins to burn, the candle extracts wax and fungus from the ear canal. One spa even explained that after the treatment I could take the wax to Chinatown for an earwax reading! As with many alternative treatments, ear candling has not gained the approval of the medical community. To get the real dirt on ear candling, I booked a Spa Girl visit. Delicate candling is an old European method of deep cleaning the ears by drawing wax in a noninvasive manner from the ear canals. Sounds simultaneously gross and fascinating, right? Without detailing the spa's technique, suffice it to say, one would not believe the volume of ear dirt, wax and toxins that build up over time deep within the human ear canal. And for the inquisitive and strong-stomached among us, clients can choose to view the results of their procedures. This unique treatment is not painful at all; the only sensation experienced was a slight warming feeling in the ear. In fact, the entire treatment was relaxing. It is performed in the same room as the massages and is complete with candles and music. The spa explained that there is increased effectiveness when ear candling immediately follows a massage; the relaxed muscles that result from a massage include muscles in and around the inner ear. After an ear candling session, many people -- including me -- experience improved hearing. One thing is for certain: With the growing buzz on ear candling, it's one spa treatment we're sure to continue to hear a lot about.
