B Rose Salon & Spa
Spa Review
A Rose by any Other Name.
Strolling down Lakeview's Southport Corridor, a lovely strip of shops
and restaurants, I found B. Rose Salon and Spa. The modernly appointed,
upscale space bustles with activity; an expansive retail area stocks up-to-the-minute
brands, a hair salon faces walls of mirrors and crystal clear windows,
and manicure and pedicure nooks are filled with clients catching up with
each other and on the latest magazines.
I had booked two much needed treatments: a Customized Facial ($80) and
a Half Hour Massage ($50). My massage therapist showed me to the treatment
area, a serene massage room where tranquil music played softly as we discussed
the specifics of my mini-massage. Let me start by saying that one should
never underestimate the power of a mini-massage. A 30-minute session concentrating
on the back, shoulders and neck can do wonders for both desk-bound executives
and urban girls-on-the-go. (I happen to be both, so this was the perfect
antidote.) The massage therapist began by applying a light oil, then she
used gentle yet firm manipulations to delve deep into my shoulders, neck
and back. I felt my muscles stretch as she rubbed out the tension. Utilizing
her fists, palms and even her forearms in circular motions, she took extra
care (and caution) covering all the troubled spots. Bringing me back down
to earth, she used her fingertips for a delicate scalp massage, stretching
down the neck. Then she turned my head in the opposite direction of each
shoulder, releasing a big stretch through each shoulder and scapula. Success-
it's amazing what you can accomplish in a half an hour.
Next, my massage therapist led me to another quaint treatment room -
stocked with a variety of skin products and tools - where I would be receiving
a Customized Facial. I was asked to jump up on a big feather bed and get
comfy, and that I did. The esthetician explained exactly what a Customized
Facial entails; traditional facial procedures tailored to suit my skin's
specific needs. Most skin treatments at B. Rose are done with Dermalogica
products and mine was no exception. The esthetician began by using Dermaolgica's
Special Cleansing Gel for cleansing, followed by a Multi-Active Toner
and Enzyme Peel for exfoliating. After extractions Dermalogica's Soothing
Additive is used, followed by a Multi-Vitamin Power Recovery Masque for
its soothing and antioxidant properties. Lastly, the Skin Hydrating Booster
and Active Moist are applied to moisturize the skin.
I was in a twilight state, so relaxed, soothed and calmed thanks to
her delicate approach (her fingers felt like feathers), the cooling affect
of the products and the tranquil oasis of the treatment room - literally
a world away from the hustle bustle of the salon area. She concluded the
treatment by giving me a pack of samples for at-home use as well as some
advice about staying away from caffeine and filling up on water. Both,
she explained, would help maintain my skin's new glow.
B. Rose offers a wide variety of services from hair cuts, color, waxing
and make-up applications to nail services and spa hand and foot treatments
(try the apple oatmeal foot mask), plus integrative massage and facial
services utilizing powerful vitamins and oxygen. I found the staff at
B. Rose to be polite and professional. The space is chic and clean making
B. Rose Salon and Spa an ideal escape for any Chicago beauty.
