For those of us who lived it, Hot Pink lips may call to mind the ‘80s while those who are new to pink may credit Lady Gaga and her love child with M·A·C, aptly named Viva Glam Gaga, for stoking the trend.

Jessica BielWhatever the reason, pink is a decidedly haute hue this season, but finding that just right temperature of fuchsia-ness requires a heaping helping of trial and error paired with a dash of skin tone knowledge. Here’s our recipe for the perfect pretty-in-pink pout.

Pucker Picks 101

Start with a good lip primer, we love Laura Geller’s Lip Spackle. If you prefer not to splurge on lip primer,  apply a dab of foundation to well moisturized lips to prep. The key to pulling off pink lips is to line the lips with a nude lip liner before applying your lipstick hue of choice.   This locks color in place without looking harsh. Apply your favorite hue and then blot lips with a tissue before dusting lips with translucent powder. Next, reapply lipstick  and wear matte or pair with a clear high-intensity gloss.

Pretty in Pink (and Coral, too.)...

Big, bad lashes have been the hallmark of sex appeal since women in the early 1900s began amping up their lashes with homemade concoctions crafted from hot beads of wax.

If that sounds dangerous, consider that some women today are opting for Eyelash Transplants. The procedure, which can run upwards of $3,000, is done by harvesting hair from the scalp and implanting it into the lash line.

And then there are eyelash extensions, semi-permanent add-ons that cost $150 to $300 and serve up faux, fluttery lashes that can last up to three months… sans the use of mascara.

But for the vast majority of women, mascara is still the quickest and cheapest way to achieve ooh-la-la lashes for day-to-day beauty. So we put mascaras to the test, trying over 100 varieties in our search for the best of the best. Along the way, we found a few that no woman should shell out her hard earned cash for and a few that stood out as stunningly effective, regardless of price.

The Best Mascaras and The Worst Mascaras...

We asked PrettyCity readers to share which one beauty product they couldn’t live without. Turns out glittering lips beat pretty peepers 2 to 1, with 50% of 1,000 respondents picking lip gloss and balm over mascara. (Powder, bronzer and concealer couldn’t even compete.)

And since we like to think of ourselves as Beauty MDs, we’re prescribing glosses that shine and balms that soothe; pick two products and sparkle in the morning.

LipFusion’s Micro-Injected Collagen Color Shine is a go-to gloss thanks to flattering colors, incredible sheen and long wear. The company claims that a proprietary formula involving marine collagen plumps and hydrates lips for “perfectly plumped lips in seconds.” And while we can’t swear that this gloss actually plumps, we can tell you we’re infatuated with the high shine, flawless hues and yummy flavor of Lipfusion.  Current faves include “Crave,” a shimmering pink and “Bare,” an of-the-moment nude. Get a hue to suit you for $38 at fusionbeauty.com.
